06th June 1944: The forces of United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Free Belgium, Free France, Free Czechoslovakia, Free Greece, Free Netherlands, Free Norway and Free Poland attack the beaches of Normandy, occupied by Germany since 1940 and made into a formidable defensive line known as the Atlantic Wall. Also volunteers from other countries such as Yugoslavia, Brazil, Spain, fought in units of other nations.
Normandy landings were important not only because it started the liberation of France from German occupation, but also because it was vital for allies to open up a second front on the west and relieve Russia of the pressure of fighting the war on the land alone. Since the fall of France in 1940, western allies had fought on sea and in air, but the land war against Third Reich was fought in North Africa 1941-1943 and in Italy 1943-44, but the mass of the German forces were on the eastern front fighting Soviet Union since 1941…
